Prof. Anne Bonds, associate professor of geography at UWM, and Prof. Derek Handley, assistant professor of English, lead an on-going research project, “Mapping Racism and Resistance in Milwaukee County.” Their project involves regular folks helping to comprehensively document all racial covenants in Milwaukee County. Each racial covenant needs to be verified by at least 5 people to confirm its racial language. These verified covenants will then be added to a map. Their team hosts community workshops to discuss racial covenants, their role in racially segregating Milwaukee County, and the specific steps involved in being a volunteer.
